Timor-Leste Partisipa iha 27th ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Electronic Commerce and Digital Economy (ACCED) and 12th Meeting of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement Negotiating Committee (DEFA NC)

The Timor-Leste delegation composed of officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and TIC-TL Participated in the 27th ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Electronic Commerce and Digital Economy (ACCED) and the 12th Meeting of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement Negotiating Committee (DEFA) as observers in plenary with member states of ASEAN Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

The meeting will be held from 23 - 28 June 2025 to discuss and evaluate various areas of work on the implementation of measures that member states have agreed under the ASEAN regional framework in the area of e-commerce and digital transformation.

In the opening of the meeting, the President or Chair of the meeting invited Timor-Leste to update the work or initiatives Timor-Leste is doing relative to relevant issues. The Head of the Timor-Leste Delegation, Mr. Flávio Simões took the opportunity to update on the strategic work that Timor-Leste is currently doing, especially related to the development of the National Trade Policy Strategy - where Mr. Flavio affirmed that an integral part of the strategy is how to develop digital trade in the country through public policy in the area of trade while at the same time ensuring digital trade integration of Timor-Leste with ASEAN according to Timor-Leste's commitment to ASEAN's regional economic integration.

Timor-Leste recognizes that with the advances in the world that also imply digital commerce, it is important that states need regional and global standards to ensure that there is an inclusive and appropriate benefit for member states, especially in how these advances can ensure stability and progress in the global and regional market.

Timor-Leste is committed to ensuring its integration in this area and believes that with all the progress in the ASEAN accession process will help Timor-Leste to better align with regional standardization and also give its constructive opinion to ensure an inclusive integration into ASEAN.

MCI, TIC-TL Delegation, and ASIA Mobility Advance Discussions on Upcoming Digital Payment Pilot Project

A delegation from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), accompanied by a representative of TIC-TL, met today with representatives from ASIA Mobility in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting took place on the sidelines of an ASEAN forum focused on the digital economy and e-commerce.

This engagement follows previous meetings held in both Kuala Lumpur and Dili concerning a forthcoming pilot project aimed at implementing a digital payment system for transport services in Dili, Timor-Leste.

During today’s discussions, both parties conducted an in-depth review of the necessary preparatory steps to be undertaken by ASIA Mobility prior to the official launch of the pilot initiative.

As a next step, a delegation from ASIA Mobility is expected to visit Dili in the near future to further coordinate and prepare for the implementation of the pilot project on the ground.
