Malaysia, April 21, 2025

His Excellency the Vice Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Augusto Jรบnior Trindade, accompanied by the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Malaysia, Mr. Lisualdo Gaspar, met with representatives of the Malaysian private sector on Saturday, April 19, in Kuala Lumpur, where he presented an overview of the current investment climate in Timor-Leste.

During the meeting, the Vice Minister emphasized that although Timor-Leste has a small-scale economy, it is a country with great potential. The recent accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and progress in the process of full integration into ASEAN reflect the country's strategic commitment to regional integration, trade facilitation, and investment attraction.

"Through ASEAN, we aim to align our national regulations with regional trade and investment standards; participate in regional supply chains and industrial corridors; strengthen trade facilitation and cross-border infrastructure; and learn from regional best practices in innovation and the development of sustainable SMEs," said the Vice Minister.

He further added that the countryโ€™s strategic direction is clear: "We are investing in human capital, strengthening our institutions, and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. With the right partners and long-term investments, Timor-Leste is ready to realize its vision of inclusive and sustainable development."

At the close of his remarks, the Vice Minister reaffirmed Timor-Lesteโ€™s strong commitment to an open, inclusive, and business-friendly economy. He stressed that as the country increasingly integrates into the global and regional economic architecture, it is also working to strengthen national capacities, consolidate institutions, and promote strong leadership in the private sector.

Finally, he invited all investors and business leaders present to explore the opportunities Timor-Leste has to offer, highlighting that a partnership with the country could contribute not only to economic success but also to regional peace, sustainability, and prosperity.

The meeting was attended by around 50 Malaysian investors, business leaders, and individuals interested in visiting Timor-Leste in the near future.
