The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Nino Pereira, welcomes a courtesy visit from the Ambassador of Vietnam in Jakarta, Indonesia, Mr. Ta Van Thong, at the Ministerโ€™s Office of MCI, Fomento Mandarin.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Vietnam, as well as to share information regarding Timor-Lesteโ€™s integration into ASEAN, which will bring significant benefits to the country, particularly in the areas of economy and trade.

Ambassador Ta Van Thong explained that Vietnam had also faced a situation similar to Timor-Leste before becoming a member of ASEAN more than thirty years ago, emphasizing that this accession can serve as a platform offering great opportunities for Timor-Leste to learn and strengthen its development capacities.

The meeting was also relevant for Timor-Leste, as in 2026 Vietnam will open an official Embassy in the country. This initiative will help balance diplomatic relations and facilitate direct cooperation between the two nations.

A Vietnamese delegation will visit Timor-Leste next year, including business representatives who, in collaboration with the MCI, will organize a business forum between Timor-Leste and Vietnam. The objective will be to mobilize investments in the sectors of tourism, agriculture, fisheries, industry, and the development of industrial parks.

The visit clearly demonstrated that relations between Timor-Leste and Vietnam will continue to strengthen and that ASEAN will serve as a bridge to new opportunities.
